I originally wrote Tokyo Angel in January of 1992.
On the surface, the song appears to be superficial; however, it is filled with imagery and metaphors.
I wrote it to convey the mystery and allure of a beautiful girl who is seen walking through the city of Tokyo at night.
Her style of dress reflects her inner joy and innocent playfulness.
While walking through the city of Tokyo, she doesn’t seem to notice her admirers because she is not seeking attention. Rather, she moves in harmony through the city at night, connected to the night-time energy of Tokyo.
In the song, she is described as having the qualities of a beautiful world in a beautiful universe and, as any beautiful world deserves, she deserves to be respected.
The reference to cherry lipstick and skin like cream was that when viewed in an abstract perspective, her small red mouth resembles the red center of the flag of Japan, framed by her fair face.
Finally, as mysteriously as she appears, she disappears like a beautiful specter.
